The work
The Unwritten Line is a novel in twelve chapters, cast as a history of the Reed Line and running to 429 pages. It was published at Tarnmund on 19 March 2015. The book takes the form of a chronicle, tracing the line chapter by chapter rather than through a single continuous narrative, and its reception at publication was marked chiefly by attention to this documentary structure, which reviewers of the day treated as unusual for a work presented as a novel. It found a readership beyond the immediate circle of those with an interest in the Reed Line itself, and was, within the year, put forward for the Varrant Prize for Literature.
